WASH GUIDE

Washing miniatures is a painting technique used to create contrast and depth in your miniatures. The technique involves thinning down a darker color and applying it to the recessed areas of the miniature, allowing it to flow into the crevices, and leaving a darker shadow.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to wash your miniatures:

  1. Gather your supplies: You will need a paintbrush, a wash or ink (such as Citadel's Nuln Oil or Army Painter's Dark Tone), and your miniature.

  2. Prepare your miniature: Before applying the wash, make sure your miniature is fully painted and dry.

  3. Mix your wash: Shake the wash bottle well and then pour some of the wash into a paint palette. Thin the wash down with water (or medium) until it has the consistency of milk.

  4. Apply the wash: Dip your paintbrush into the wash and start applying it to the miniature. Focus on the recessed areas and crevices, letting the wash flow into them. Don't worry about getting the wash on the raised areas of the miniature; it will create natural shading.

  5. Remove excess wash: Use a clean brush to remove any excess wash that pools on the miniature. You can also use a paper towel to gently dab away any excess wash.

  6. Let it dry: Once you've finished applying the wash and removing any excess, let the miniature dry completely.

  7. Repeat as needed: Depending on the level of shading you want to achieve, you can repeat the wash process, allowing each layer to dry completely before applying the next.

Tips:

  • When applying the wash, be careful not to let it pool too much on the miniature, as this can create a messy appearance.
  • Make sure to shake the wash bottle well before use, as the pigment can settle at the bottom of the bottle.
  • If you accidentally get wash on areas of the miniature that you don't want shaded, you can use a clean brush to remove it while it's still wet.
  • Experiment with different wash colors to create different shading effects.

With a little practice and patience, you'll be able to use washes to create beautiful shading and depth on your miniatures.
