LAYERING GUIDE

Layering Guide:

Layering is a technique used in miniature painting to create the illusion of depth and texture on a surface. It involves applying multiple thin layers of paint to gradually build up color and contrast.

Here is a step by step guide to layering miniatures:

  1. Choose your colors - Select the colors you want to use for your layering technique. Choose colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, as they will blend more easily.

  2. Apply your basecoat - Apply a basecoat to your miniature, and make sure it is completely dry before moving on to the next step.

  3. Paint the shadows - Using a darker shade of your chosen color, apply a thin layer of paint to the areas of the miniature that would naturally have shadows. This could include creases, undercuts, or recessed areas.

  4. Paint the midtones - Using a lighter shade of your chosen color, apply a thin layer of paint to the areas of the miniature that would naturally be in the middle of the light and shadow areas.

  5. Paint the highlights - Using an even lighter shade of your chosen color, apply a thin layer of paint to the areas of the miniature that would naturally be in direct light.

  6. Repeat the process - Repeat steps 3-5, gradually building up the layers of color and contrast on your miniature.

  7. Smooth out the transitions - Use a clean brush or a damp brush to blend the colors together and smooth out any visible transitions between the layers.

Layering can be a time-consuming technique, but it can create beautiful and realistic effects on your miniatures. Be sure to work in thin layers and allow each layer to dry completely before moving on to the next one. You can also experiment with different color combinations and layering techniques, such as feathering or glazing, to achieve different effects on your miniatures.
